Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court has directed the state government to instruct the Director-General of Police and the Inspector Generals of Police to make it mandatory for all police stations to register FIRs irrespective of where the crime has occurred.
The division bench of Chief Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka and Justice Mohammad Nawaz ordered that this instruction should reach all the police stations within one month and also that the public should be made aware of the change.
This direction was issued by the bench when disposing off a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Advocate S Umapathi, seeking directions to implement an advisory issued by the Centre in February 2014.
It was also made clear that non-registration of FIRs would attract prosecution of the police officers involved under section 166A of the IPC, apart from a departmental enquiry.
