Columbia Hospital, Indiana Hospital announce outreach OPD for Parkinson’s treatment

Mangaluru: The Columbia Asia Referral Hospital, Yeswanthpur, in association with Indiana Hospital and Heart Institute, announced its first-in-the-city outreach OPD for Deep brain stimulation (DBS) treatment for Parkinson’s disease.

The outreach OPD will be available to patients once a month at the Indiana Hospital and renowned neurologist from Columbia Asia Hospitals, Dr. Guruprasad Hosurkar will be in the city for consultations and to provide the necessary medical assistance.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive nervous system disorder that affects a person’s movements. DBS is the most commonly used surgical treatment for this disease and has been used to treat intractable pain for several decades. More recently, the use of this technology has proven to be a safe and effective treatment. This surgery comes has a boon to patients in the middle stages of Parkinson’s.

Addressing teh reporters here on Friday, September 20, Dr. Guruprasad Hosurkar, Consultant Neurology, Columbia Asia Referral Hospital, Yeshwanthpur said, “Parkinson’s is a special neuro-degenerative disorder for which good symptomatic treatment is available, but there is a huge un-met need for therapeutic options in moderately advanced stages. Symptoms vary from person to person and typically affect one side of the body first, even as they worsen. A person with Parkinson’s disease cannot be cured completely. They would require a comprehensive treatment to completely recover. DBS is one such advanced treatment for patients with severe movement disorders and it costs around Rs 12 to Rs 16 lakhs.”
