ADGP arrested on Madras HC premises over boy abduction linked to inter-caste marriage
In an unprecedented move, high drama unfolded at the Madras High Court on Monday as senior IPS officer H M Jayaram, holding the rank of Additional Director-General of Police (ADGP), was arrested on court orders in connection with the abduction of a 16-year-old boy.
Justice P Velmurugan, who is hearing the case, ordered Jayaram’s immediate arrest after two accused in custody reportedly confessed to his involvement in the incident. Jayaram, a 1996-batch IPS officer, was taken into judicial custody shortly after the order was issued.
The abduction case stems from an inter-caste marriage between Dhanush, 23, and Vijaya Sri, 21, who tied the knot against her family’s wishes. Unable to trace Vijaya Sri, her father Vanaraja, his brother Manikandan, and another relative allegedly sought help from KV Kuppam MLA Poovai Jagan Moorthy. It is alleged that Jayaram lent his official vehicle and assisted in the plan, which led to the boy, Indrachand, being forcibly taken from Kalambakkam on May 10.
The group involved included former police inspector Maheshwari and advocate Sarath, both of whom have already been arrested. The judge, while hearing MLA Jagan Moorthy’s anticipatory bail plea, rebuked him for mobilizing party workers to obstruct the investigation and directed him to cooperate fully, without any entourage.
“The court cannot grant a public servant the privilege it gives to an elected representative,” Justice Velmurugan said, reinforcing that aiding a crime comes with consequences.
