Another elephant on highway, damages trees and power lines
On Saturday morning, wild elephants caused a major disruption on the Ujire-Periyashanthi road near Boliyaru, Dharmasthala. The herd uprooted a large tree along the National Highway, which then toppled over the 11 kV power line that connects Dharmasthala to Shishila. As a result, three electric poles were also knocked down.
In response to the damage, MESCOM authorities arrived promptly at the scene to address the situation and initiate repairs. Wild elephants are frequently sighted in this area, which is known for their occasional interactions with human infrastructure. In fact, this isn’t the first incident of elephants causing a disturbance here—there was a previous case where an elephant attacked a vehicle in the same vicinity.
The swift action by the authorities helped minimize any further power outage and ensured that the area’s electricity supply was quickly restored. However, the recurrence of such incidents highlights the ongoing challenge of coexisting with wildlife in areas that border human settlements.
Local residents remain on alert as the presence of these powerful creatures continues to pose risks to both infrastructure and safety.
