Bengaluru: With the state government’s approval in a notification released on April 16, five new entrants have joined the growing league of private/deemed universities in Karnataka.

The five universities St Joseph’s, New Horizon, Vidyashilp, and Atria of Bengaluru, and Sri Jagadguru Murugarajendra of Chitradurga will now be allowed to expand their campuses and launch new courses.

Deputy CM Ashwath Narayan, who holds the higher education portfolio, told that there is an increasing need to bring more private universities.

“The majority of these institutions receiving university status are non-profit organizations.  With our economy becoming more knowledge-based, we need to invest in our education system,” said Ashwath Narayan, deputy chief minister.

He also informed that the state government is strengthening its existing public universities and institutions.“We’re integrating technology to help our universities meet the industry’s needs. The government is also investing in our institution, from corporate social responsibility funds to set up our own source code for the learning management system,” he added.
