Bengaluru: The novel coronavirus, which wreaked havoc and tremendous fear in the hearts of people throughout the world, has also largely affected the poultry industry.

According to reports, a piece of misinformation was doing the rounds on social media stating that by eating chicken meat, the deadly life-threatening virus could easily spread. This has caused a negative impact on the poultry industry.

Karnataka Poultry Farmers & Breeders Association’s (KPFBA) statistical reports suggest that Karnataka alone has observed a 30 percent downward trend in the chicken meat market and has suffered an estimated loss of Rs 10 crores.

The association also said that the broiler chicken meat, which was previously sold at Rs 80 per kilo, has dropped to Rs 50. Bengaluru alone is expected to have suffered a loss ranging between 30 to 40 percent.

According to sources, false information has led to this major decline in the poultry business. Although proven fake, the fear in people still exists, due to which the poultry industry, on the whole, has suffered a negative impact.

Meanwhile, KPFBA has said that even after the state government confirmed the news to be fake, the market conditions had not changed.
