Bengaluru: Inventor, entrepreneur and policymaker Sam Pitroda has stated that in India, the need of the hour is to encourage education that focuses on research and innovation, while translating knowledge for positive societal change.

“We must enable our students to think and innovate in various fields, in order to have a larger community impact,’’ he said. He was speaking at the inaugural event of Trans-Disciplinary University (TDU)  innovative academic curriculum for 2017-18.

Pitroda, one of the co-founders of TDU further said, “India has one of the world’s largest educational systems with 1.4 million schools, 35,000 colleges and 600 universities. Over half of the population is under 30 years of age and 10 million people join the workforce each year,” he added.

Speaking about the Institute’s initiatives, Dr. Balakrishna Pisupati, Vice Chancellor, TDU, said, “We at TDU, focus on designing and deploying innovative and novel courses, both for study and research, using modern technology and tools. The TDU attempts to provide affordable, scalable and sustainable education for lifelong learning that is responsive and relevant. Using federated structure, courses at TDU are offered by a range of institutions and partners both from India and abroad, including the United Nations.”

Focused on providing an atmosphere of free and fair learning opportunities, not based on one’s economic background but instead on intellectual inquisitiveness, the University offers equal opportunities for interested students who are passionate about learning.
