Bangladeshi National Arrested for Illegal Stay in Mangaluru
Mangaluru: A 25-year-old Bangladeshi national, Anurul Sheik, was apprehended on January 10 from Mukka village on the outskirts of Mangaluru for living illegally in India.
The joint operation by the Internal Security Division (ISD) and Mangaluru Police followed a tip-off, revealing that Anurul had entered India illegally via the Lalgol border in West Bengal three years ago. Initially settling in Murshidabad, he later moved to Mangaluru and worked as a construction laborer.
Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara, addressing the Legislative Council in Belagavi, stated that 159 Bangladeshi and 24 Pakistani nationals have been detained in Karnataka for illegal residency. He highlighted the formation of a special unit to track and address illegal immigration, an issue affecting the region on a large scale.
This arrest follows heightened vigilance after cases such as the Bengaluru NIA court’s sentencing of Bangladeshi terrorist Jahidul Islam, also known as Kausar, on December 30, 2024. Jahidul, a key figure in the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), had illegally entered India and was linked to the 2014 Burdwan blast and the 2018 Bodh Gaya blast.
The operation underscores Karnataka’s commitment to addressing illegal immigration and security risks posed by undocumented individuals.
