Belagavi/Mumbai: Possibly aggravating sentiments surrounding the Karnataka-Maharashtra border issue further, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said that areas along the border where there is an abundance of Marathi-speaking people should be declared as a Union Territory till a final verdict on the issue is given by the Supreme Court.

The Maharashtra CM was speaking at a launch event for a book on the boundary dispute between the two states, reports PTI.

The book is titled ‘Maharashtra-Karnataka Seemavad: Sangharsh Aani Sankalp’ (Maharashtra-Karnataka boundary dispute: struggle and pledge) and is compiled and edited by Deepak Pawar.

In his speech, CM Thackeray lashed out at the Government of Karnataka over the alleged atrocities perpetrated against the Marathi-speaking people in the areas along the border. He added that they must fight to win the case for the inclusion of those regions in Maharashtra.

Pointing out that the border dispute is still pending before the Supreme Court, Thackeray accused the Karnataka Government of being in “contempt of court” by renaming Belgaum as Belagavi, declaring it as the state’s second capital, constructing a Legislature building in the region and holding sessions in the said building.

“Karnataka-occupied Marathi-speaking areas should be declared as a Union Territory till the Supreme Court gives its final verdict,” he added, PTI reports.

Stating that the commonality between all governments and Chief Ministers in Karnataka is that they commit atrocities against the Marathas and their language, Thackeray said that they will not rest till they win. “If the issue is resolved during the time of this (Maha Vikas Aghadi) government, it never will be resolved,” he added.

He then called on the Marathi people to united and be “determined to win”.

Tensions between the two states have been on the rise over the border issue. Recently, leaders across all political parties in Karnataka slammed Thackeray for saying that his government is committed to incorporating areas of Karnataka where Marathi-speaking people are a majority into Maharashtra.
