Bengaluru Braces for School Reopenings Amid Road Chaos
With schools in Bengaluru reopening in under ten days, the city is staring at an impending traffic crisis. Roads are riddled with crater-like potholes, dug-up patches, broken footpaths, and overflowing drains—turning school commutes into daily battles.
Schools are sounding the alarm. Sri Kumaran Children’s Home, Mallasandra, has urged parents to write directly to civic bodies, hoping collective pressure will push for quicker repairs. “We’ve raised concerns with officials, but parents too must step up,” said Deepa Sridhar, secretary of Sri Kumaran Group of Institutions.
The problem isn’t isolated. With white-topping work disrupting the city centre, over 14 schools around MG Road, St Mark’s Road, and Brigade Road are set to face mayhem. To ease congestion, St Joseph’s Boys High School has added three leased BMTC buses and is encouraging Metro use for older students. “We’re asking parents to avoid private cars,” said principal Fr Sunil Fernandes.
Students are already affected. Lasya Mohan Varma, a Class 11 student at Inventure Academy, recounted delays during recent board exams due to waterlogged roads. “Varthur-Sarjapur Road is barely navigable—traffic crawls in a single lane,” she said.
In Gear Innovative International, founder M Srinivasan highlighted the chronic congestion outside the school. Community spirit is filling governance gaps: residents offer stranded kids snacks or restrooms.
Parents remain frustrated. “Walking isn’t safe either—no footpaths, just dust and danger,” said Piyush Jaiswal, whose child takes over an hour to cover 10 km.
