Bengaluru Duo Creates Interactive Flood Risk Map
In response to recent flooding in Bengaluru, IT professionals Aman Bhargava and Vivek Matthew developed an innovative map, Blr Water Log, to illustrate the city’s waterflow patterns. Hosted on their blog, diagramchasing.fun, the map highlights how Bengaluru’s terrain directs water flow and identifies areas prone to waterlogging.
Bhargava, a data visualization developer, and Matthew, a software engineer and Open Street Maps contributor, used digital elevation models from the open-source Copernicus initiative with 30-meter resolution. Shades of blue on the map depict water accumulation, with darker hues highlighting flood-prone zones like Ejipura, Koramangala, and Manyata Tech Park.
The map, created in three weeks, includes clickable markers tied to news articles about frequently flooded areas. Users can locate neighborhoods, read articles, and contribute data to enhance the tool. Bhargava explained the aim is to spark interest in understanding urban drainage and its role in flooding.
Since its launch, the map has garnered over 1 lakh views on X (formerly Twitter). Netizens have praised its simplicity and functionality, with some suggesting similar maps for Mumbai and Chennai. Matthew affirmed the project’s open-source nature allows adaptation for other cities.
This initiative offers a blend of technology and community-driven solutions, empowering citizens to better understand and address urban flooding challenges.
