Bengaluru experiences unexpected rainfall, weather alert issued for Karnataka
On Sunday morning, Bengaluru residents were surprised by an unanticipated downpour, leaving many unprepared. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that this rain is not confined to the city but is expected to affect south interior Karnataka and the Malnad regions as well. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) issued a rainfall warning via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, forecasting “scattered moderate rainfall” in southern interior, coastal, and hilly areas of the state. In contrast, dry conditions are anticipated in the northern interior regions. The state is also expected to experience moderate to heavy fog, accompanied by scattered showers.
Key Bengaluru areas, including MG Road, Jayanagar, Hebbal, Sultanpalya, RT Nagar, and RR Nagar, witnessed light rainfall on Sunday. The IMD attributed this unusual rain to a larger weather system, linked to a developing cyclone near the eastern coast of Sri Lanka and the southwest Bay of Bengal. This system is causing widespread rainfall and cooler temperatures in multiple Karnataka districts, including Bengaluru. The Meteorological Centre in Bengaluru forecasts light rain to persist in the city for the next 48 hours. Temperatures on Sunday ranged between 27°C and 17°C, with further cooling expected to 26°C and 16°C on Monday. Additionally, the IMD has issued a severe cold wave warning for Bidar, Kalaburagi, and Raichur districts, urging residents to prepare for a sharp drop in temperatures.
