Bengaluru Sets New May Rain Record with 307.9 mm – Wettest Month in History
Bengaluru has officially experienced its wettest May on record, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirming a total rainfall of 307.9 mm as of Monday morning, May 26. This figure surpasses the previous May record of 305.4 mm in 2023, making May 2024 the most rain-soaked month ever recorded in the city for this season.
Earlier high rainfall records for May include 270.4 mm in 2022, 241.9 mm in 2017, and 239.8 mm in 2018, highlighting the unprecedented intensity of this year’s showers. The heavy rainfall over the past few days has resulted in waterlogged streets, delayed traffic, and flood alerts in several low-lying areas.
The IMD’s local weather forecast indicates continued wet conditions in the coming days. Residents can expect light to moderate rain paired with steady winds ranging from 40 to 50 km/h. Daytime highs are expected to stay around 26°C, while nighttime lows may hover near 20°C. Over the next 48 hours, the sky will remain mostly cloudy, maintaining the cooler and damp conditions Bengaluru has seen since the southwest monsoon advanced into Karnataka.
This extreme rainfall is part of a broader trend of increasing pre-monsoon intensity, calling for enhanced urban infrastructure and flood management preparedness.
