Bengaluru Student Tracks Abuser to US After Broken Marriage Promise
A 22-year-old final-year engineering student from South Bengaluru has lodged a complaint against her ex-boyfriend, accusing him of sexually abusing her under the guise of marriage. The accused, 28-year-old Nandan (name changed), a software engineer, had befriended her on Instagram in 2023. The two met in person in January 2024, and by February, he proposed to her.
Shreya (name changed) initially declined, citing their caste difference—she is from a Scheduled Caste, while Nandan is a Brahmin. However, Nandan claimed caste was irrelevant and even gave her an “engagement” ring. He gained the family’s trust, introduced himself to her mother, and frequently visited their home. He also claimed to have purchased a flat in RR Nagar as their future residence.
In September, he allegedly raped Shreya, saying they were practically married already. Their engagement was set for early May, with a wedding planned for June, and even a pre-wedding shoot was completed. Suddenly, Nandan backed out, citing renewed concerns over caste.
On April 23, he claimed he was arrested in Dubai while fleeing from Russian and Chinese employers, then went incommunicado. Suspicious, Shreya traced him using his passport number and discovered he was actually in Austin, Texas.
When she and her father confronted his family with evidence, they were humiliated and denied entry. Nandan’s father reportedly admitted his son had been sent abroad to avoid the wedding. A case has been filed against Nandan and his parents. A lookout notice is pending.
