Bengaluru Takes a Step Towards Easing Traffic Woes with Adaptive Traffic Control System
Bengalur, once known as the Garden City, has been grappling with notorious traffic congestion, earning it the unwanted title of “traffic jam city.” However, relief is in sight as the Bengaluru City Traffic Police and the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) have successfully trialled the Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS), utilising artificial intelligence (AI) to optimise traffic flow .
This innovative system replaces traditional time-based signals with AI-driven smart signals that adjust green light durations according to real-time traffic conditions. By implementing Vehicle Actuated Control (VAC) technology, ATCS reduces waiting times for motorists, particularly on busy roads.
- Saves time: 10 seconds per signal, translating to 100 seconds saved when crossing 10 signals
- Reduces fuel consumption
- Enhances overall traffic efficiency
Implementation and Expansion
With an investment of ₹53 crore, ATCS will be installed in 165 city circles, building on the existing 41 circles already equipped with this technology. Key locations include:
Tagore Park Junction
- Vishweshwarpur College Junction
- Pi Vista K.R. Road
- Jayanagar 4th Main Road
- C-DoT Company has been entrusted with installing and maintaining the ATCS system.

Bengaluru’s traffic woes are well-documented, with the city ranking 21st in the Global Traffic Congestion Rankings¹. The successful implementation of ATCS offers hope for a smoother commute, but addressing underlying issues such as rapid urbanisation and lack of suitable road infrastructure remains crucia.
