Bengaluru Welcomes Monsoon With Showers, Relief & Flood Fears
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a wet and cloudy week ahead for Bengaluru as the southwest monsoon officially arrived in the city. Starting Wednesday, light rain and overcast skies will persist through 1 June, offering cooler, more comfortable days after a blistering summer.
From 28 May to 1 June, expect daily showers, with temperatures ranging from a pleasant 20°C at night to 29°C during the day. This mild spell comes as a respite, but concerns are mounting over the city’s preparedness for the monsoon season.
On 2 and 3 June, light rain is forecast to continue as rainfall activity gradually intensifies.
Monsoon Arrives, City on Alert
Pre-monsoon showers over the past week brought much-needed relief but also exposed vulnerabilities in civic infrastructure, including waterlogging on key roads. The IMD bulletin confirmed monsoon advancement across Karnataka, Maharashtra (including Mumbai), and parts of the central Arabian Sea.
In response, Chief Civic Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao convened an emergency review. He instructed that stormwater drains lacking RCC retaining walls be addressed on priority, alongside urgent desilting and dredging across the city to prevent urban flooding.
Bengaluru’s Cool Yet Cautious Week
As the city gears up for more rain from 28 to 30 May, temperatures will dip further to 19–26°C. Though the cool climate is welcome, low-lying areas remain vulnerable to flash floods, making proactive civic action critical.
