To curb reckless riding and enhance pedestrian safety, the Bengaluru City Traffic Police will now recommend cancellation of driving licenses for repeat offenders caught riding on pavements.
Strict Action Against Repeat Violators
Motorists caught violating the rule more than three times will have their DLs sent to the RTO for cancellation, said Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) MN Anucheth.
In 2023, around 9,500 cases of footpath riding were reported, but the number surged to 15,000 last year. Special enforcement drives have been launched to curb this menace, with e-bike riders being the most frequent offenders.
How the Penalty System Works
- First two offences: Riders face a fine.
- Third offence onwards: A fine is imposed, and their driving license is recommended for cancellation.
Traffic Police Take a Tough Stand
The decision, made during a senior officers’ meeting, reflects a zero-tolerance approach toward traffic violations that endanger pedestrians.
