BENGALURU: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a spell of unusually cool weather and light rain for Bengaluru in the first week of December, with temperatures expected to remain significantly lower than normal. The change in weather conditions is attributed to the impact of Cyclone Ditwah, which is moving along the Tamil Nadu coast and influencing cloud cover and moisture levels over Karnataka.

Cloudy skies and light to moderate rain expected

According to the IMD’s latest bulletin, Bengaluru will witness generally cloudy skies until Tuesday, along with light to moderate rain across several parts of the city. The continuous cloud cover, combined with moisture-laden winds, will keep daytime temperatures lower than the seasonal average.

The IMD has also indicated that early morning mist is likely to appear in isolated areas of the city, especially in low-lying and poorly ventilated neighbourhoods.

Temperatures dip as December begins

With northeasterly winds carrying cool moisture from the Bay of Bengal, Bengaluru has been experiencing weather conditions that many residents have likened to hill stations such as Shimla or Ooty. The IMD noted that the maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to remain below normal, pushing the city into an early winter-like phase.

Residents on Monday morning reported colder-than-usual conditions, with temperatures dipping enough for many to pull out sweaters, jackets, and blankets earlier than expected.

Cyclone Ditwah’s indirect influence on Karnataka

Cyclone Ditwah, which has developed over the Bay of Bengal and is impacting the Tamil Nadu coastline, is indirectly affecting the weather in Bengaluru by drawing moisture inland. While Karnataka is not in the direct path of the cyclone, such systems typically cause widespread cloud formation, drizzle, and cooler temperatures across interior South India.

Weather models indicate that as the cyclone continues to move along the coast, intermittent rainfall may persist over parts of south interior Karnataka.

Chilly mornings ahead, say forecasters

Meteorologists have advised residents to brace for cooler mornings, particularly in the early hours when mist formation is likely. Temperatures may drop further during the night, amplifying the winter chill in the city.

However, the IMD clarified that heavy rainfall is not expected in Bengaluru, and the city will mainly see light showers over the next few days.

Conclusion

With the combination of cloud cover, mild rainfall, and seasonal winds, Bengaluru is set to experience a pleasant yet noticeably chilly start to December. The IMD will continue to monitor the evolving impact of Cyclone Ditwah and issue updates as the system progresses.
