Bengaluru’s Rollercoaster Year: Shocking Crimes, Water Crisis, and More in 2024
Bengaluru, the bustling IT hub, made headlines for both shocking incidents and pressing issues throughout 2024, making it one of the most “newsy” cities in India. The year kicked off with the harrowing tale of Suchana Seth, a Bengaluru CEO, who murdered her 4-year-old son in Goa and attempted to transport the body in a suitcase to the city, only to be caught after staff raised suspicions.
In March, the city was rocked by a bomb blast at Rameshwaram Cafe in Whitefield, which injured eight people. The explosion, initially suspected to be caused by a gas leak, was later identified as an IED attack. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested two suspects, Abdul Matheen Taba and Mussavir Hussain Shazeb, in connection with the blast.
Bengaluru also faced a severe water crisis, exacerbated by a dry spell. In response, the city’s water board increased the supply of treated wastewater, helping alleviate the crisis. However, the situation took a turn as the monsoon season brought heavy rains and floods, submerging IT hubs like Manyata Tech Park and Whitefield.
In the realm of crime, the murder of Mahalakshmi, whose body was dismembered and stored in a refrigerator by her boyfriend, shocked the city. Later, software engineer Atul Subhash’s tragic suicide sparked debates on the misuse of dowry laws. Despite these grim events, Bengaluru’s resilience was evident as it navigated through an eventful and challenging year.
