Bias at the Doorstep: IIT Grad’s Home Hunt Turns Sour in Bengaluru
In a troubling incident that has triggered widespread discussions on social media platform X, a graduate from IIT Madras alleged religious discrimination while seeking housing in Bengaluru.
The individual, identified as Sanjeed, initially posted on May 24, expressing excitement about his upcoming wedding and asked for leads on a 2BHK apartment in areas like Indiranagar and Koramangala.
However, the optimism quickly dissolved. Two days later, he updated his followers, stating that after viewing several properties with brokers, he was told that landlords were unwilling to rent to Muslims due to “Pakistan-related concerns.” His post questioned the prevailing prejudice and asked which parts of Bengaluru were free from Islamophobia.
His experience has since attracted close to 50,000 views and an outpouring of support from netizens. Many condemned the incident, offering both emotional comfort and practical advice.
One user apologized for the discrimination Sanjeed faced and suggested more inclusive areas such as Queens Road, Shivaji Nagar, Kora Second Block, and Cox Town—known to have Muslim landlords and more welcoming communities.
Another empathized deeply, sharing their own experience of recently getting married and understanding the stress of house hunting. They generously offered their home as a temporary place for Sanjeed until he finds suitable accommodation.
The incident underscores ongoing housing discrimination and calls attention to the urgent need for inclusive urban living practices.
