Vijayapura: With the concentrated efforts of Asha and Anganwadi workers with the support of elected representatives of Gram Panchayats, the district has ensured that 27 villages have become Covid free.

Though the district has around 629 villages and compared to that number, the Covid free villages are still meager, however the Zilla Panchayat has been working to increase the number of Covid free villages.

Govind Reddy, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer said that entire credit goes to Asha and Anganwadi workers who have been doing a tremendously great job of conducting door to door surveys for early detection of the Covid positive cases in the rural areas.

“ Early detection is the key to success in reducing the number of positive cases and ensures that the infection does not spread. If the early detection is done, then the infected persons can be immediately isolated which prevents the spreading of infection to others. At the same time, the patient can be treated at the first stage itself which helps his faster recovery”, he said.

Explaining the process that started in making the villages Covid free, Reddy said that as per the government order, Covid Task Force was constituted which included, Asha and Anganwadi workers, local beat police, influential local residents and local elected representatives.

The members were given training as per the protocol on how to conduct door to door surveys.

The Gram Panchayat presidents were made the head of the team to monitor the progress.

“ To ensure that the people show confidence in the staff that is conducting the survey, some local people were also involved in the team”, he said.

Reddy expressed happiness that the staff members, during their door to door survey, did not face any problems from the residents and none of them ill-treated the health staff.

“ We were hearing news from other parts of the country that medical staff were abused and even beaten up by local people when they visited houses for the survey. Thankfully no such incident reported from the district as people cooperated with the staff”, he said.

He said that after identification of suspected patients, they were sent to Covid Care Centres set up either in a prime health centre, community health centre or in the local community halls where the patients were given treatment and food.

Only those who needed higher treatment were referred to the District Government Hospital.

At the local level, awareness programmes are held continuously to make sure that people do not venture out after 10:00 am. They do not gather outside shops or sit to public podiums found in rural areas.

Since Asha and Anganwadi workers were doing a great job, to encourage them, the district administration offered them food kits and Saris.

Reddy said that in coming days, the Task Force plans to increase the number of Covid free villages to make sure that all the villages of the district become Covid pandemic free.
