Vijayapura: Four alleged supari or contract killers were arrested by the district police for murdering an individual for a sum of Rs 6 lakhs.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Superintendent of Police Anupam Agrawal said that the accused, all of whom are natives of the Babaleshwar taluk, are identified as Paigambar Gokavi, Paigambar Kolur, Chandrakant Punnanavar and Sagar Sanjeevgol.
According to the police, Paigambar Kolur suspected that his wife, identified as Parveen, had an illicit affair with one Yakub Kolur, one his cousins.
A raged Paigambar decided to eliminate his cousin by hiring contract killers. He offered them Rs 6 lakhs and they killed Yakub by strangling him. They dumped his body in the river Krisha at the Kolhar bridge. They also attempted to destroy the evidence, Agarwal said.
The father of the deceased, Chandbasha Kolur had filed a missing person complaint with the Babaleshwar police in August of 2020. He filed another complaint on January 8, accusing some persons of killing his son, after which the police arrested the four persons.
The accused confessed to the crime during the investigation and revealed that they had lured Yakub into the car under the pretext of going on a joyride in August of 2020. They strangled him and dumped his body after the act.
During the investigation, the police seized the car that was allegedly used to carry the deceased, a motorcycle, and Rs. 11,100 from the accused.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Lakshminarayan, CPI S. B. Palbhavi and PSI S. B. Goudar were also present.
