Vijayapura: Even as the government is announcing and claiming that it has no death of Remdesivir injection, which has turned out be a ‘life saving drug’ for Covid patients, however the ground reality is that both, private and government hospitals are indeed facing shortage of this injection.

Many government doctors who did not wish to be identified, admitted that they are not getting enough supply of Remdesivir injection.

They said that while the number of Covid cases is rising and the hospital is admitting patients regularly, they are not getting adequate quantum of this injection for treating Covid patients who need it urgently.

Though the government hospitals are facing shortage of injection, their condition compared to private hospitals is comparatively better.

The private hospitals are strolling to procure this injection especially after the government making it compulsory for private hospitals to provide their requirement to the district drug controller officials for getting the Remdesivir dose.

Dr Hampangouda Patil, head of a private hospital, says that it has become a herculean task for private hospitals to procure Remdesivir.“ We are fighting tooth and nail to save our patients who need this injection. Since we are not getting enough, we are administering three doses instead of six doses to the patients.”

“ Despite these difficulties, we are trying our best to procure as many as possible “, he added.

He said that leave alone the patients, even the medical staff who are infected from Covid are fighting doses of this injection.

“ Some of my friends have procured the dose in black from Gulbarga and Bengaluru by paying an exorbitant price”, said Dr Tammarao Patil, who is working at a private hospital in Vijayapura.

Professor Dr S A Kora, Head of the Department of Medicine in BVV Sangha’s S Nijalingappa Medical College and Hanagal Shri Kumareshwar Hospital and Research Centre of Bagalkot, said that they are facing a similar shortage of this vital injection.

Meanwhile, some doctors also cautioned against the rampant use of this injection is they believe it should be given at the appropriate stage of virus and not to every Covid patient as the injection could have severe side effects on the kidney and liver.

After the district administration received complaints about Remdesivir being sold in black-market, the Deputy Commissioner of Bijapur, P. Sunil Kumar has issued notice to the District Drug Controller Officers asking them to take necessary actions to prevent the dose being sold in black-market.

He said that a couple of days ago, they received 480 Remdesivir injections from Kalburagi which were given to government hospitals and other private hospitals that have placed the order.

He said he would be holding meetings with the private hospitals to assess the situation.

He made it clear that there is no dearth of doses in the government hospitals in the district.

“ At the same time, we are making every effort to stop black marketing of this injection”, he asserted.
