Boy killed in mob fury found to be innocent victim of mental illness
Ashraf, a 36-year-old native of Pulpalli village in Sultan Bathery, Wayanad, Kerala, fell victim to a horrific mob lynching in Mangaluru. The incident took place on April 28 during a local cricket game in Kudupu, where he was accused by a group of men of chanting a pro-Pakistan slogan—a claim yet to be substantiated. Mangaluru Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal stated that the precise motive remains under probe.
Ashraf had only recently moved to Mangaluru, working as a daily-wage labourer. His lifeless body was discovered in Kudupu, about 10 km from the city. The remains were handed over to his grieving family, and his funeral was scheduled in Kottakkal, Kerala, on April 30.
His brother, Abdul Jabbar, revealed that Ashraf had a mild cognitive impairment and had no ties to any political or extremist groups. Shockingly, the body was reportedly left unattended for close to two hours after the assault.
Authorities initially classified the case as a suspicious unnatural death. However, after the post-mortem report indicated severe internal trauma due to repeated assaults and lack of urgent medical help, it was updated to a mob lynching case.
So far, 20 individuals have been detained, with police believing at least 25 were involved. The first attacker has been identified as 26-year-old auto driver T Sachin. Key suspects include Devadas, Manjunath, and others. Multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita have been applied, and a detailed investigation is ongoing.
