BENGALURU: In response to Bengaluru’s growing waste management issues, H&M Hennes & Mauritz Retail Pvt. Ltd., H&M Services, and Bal Raksha Bharat (Save the Children India) have launched Tikau Fashion, a groundbreaking circular economy project aimed at transforming waste management and promoting sustainable practices.

Tikau Fashion focuses on recycling and upcycling old clothes into new, stylish items like bags, rugs, and quilts. This initiative seeks to address both waste and unemployment by leveraging Bengaluru’s youth. By integrating technology and offering ongoing mentorship, Tikau Fashion not only creates job opportunities but also delivers significant environmental benefits. The project builds on the successes of the Youth Innovation and Action Lab (YIAL), which has effectively fostered youth-led innovation across multiple states.

Key Features of Tikau Fashion Include:

  • Waste Reduction: Transforming textile waste into high-quality products, reducing the fashion industry’s environmental impact.
  • Youth Empowerment: Engaging young people in eco-friendly product creation, enhancing their skills in design, entrepreneurship, and sustainability.
  • Community Education: Raising awareness about responsible waste management and sustainable fashion.

Ms. Yanira Ramirez from H&M highlighted the project’s alignment with global sustainability goals and its potential to inspire a new generation of conscious consumers. Sudarshan Suchi of Bal Raksha Bharat emphasized the initiative’s role in addressing textile waste and providing opportunities for marginalized youth.

As Bengaluru faces escalating waste management challenges, Tikau Fashion offers an innovative solution by embracing circular economy principles, which focus on recycling, reuse, and remanufacturing to minimize waste and maximize resource use.
