Kanchur organises Sensitization Programs for Nursing Staff and ASHA workers

Mangaluru: Kanachur Institute of Medical Sciences, Natekal, Mangalore organised various events on occasion of “World Breast Feeding Week” from August 1 to 7 keeping in mind the theme for this year “Breast Feeding – foundation of life”. Department of Community Medicine in collaboration with the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Department of Paediatrics organised Sensitization Programs for Nursing Staff and ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activists) workers of Kotekar & Natekal PHC’s on August 6 & 7 respectively.

Sensitization Program for Nurses:

The programme was held on August 6 at the Kanachur Hospital Auditorium from 2 pm to 4 pm which was attended by approximately 50 nursing staff. Dr. Prajna Sharma, Assistant Professor – Community Medicine gave a comprehensive overview of breastfeeding and discussed the role of nursing staff in hospital settings. Dr. Rekhalatha, Associate Professor – Obstetrics & Gynaecology discussed the breastfeeding issues through her interactive session. Dr. Noorulla A. M – Senior Resident – Paediatrics briefed the nurses regarding the problems faced during breastfeeding and suggested the best possible solutions.

Sensitization Program for ASHA workers:

A sensitisation programme was held for the ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activists) workers of Kotekar and Natekal Primary Health Centres on August 7. Approximately 50 ASHA workers were benefitted by the event.

Sessions on sharing comprehensive knowledge about breastfeeding to ASHA workers were organised. Dr. Prajna Sharma, Assistant Professor – Community Medicine gave a comprehensive overview of breastfeeding and discussed the role of ASHA workers in Community. Dr. Rekhalatha, Associate Professor-Gynaecology discussed the breastfeeding issues through her interactive session. Dr. Noorulla A. M, Senior Resident – Paediatrics briefed regarding the problems faced during breastfeeding and suggested the best possible solutions.

The formal program was held post the sensitization program for the ASHA workers. Abdul Rahiman, Director – Kanachur Institute of Medical Sciences; Dr Uma Devi – Medical Officer, PHC, Natekal; Dr DeviPrasad, Medical Superintendent, Kanachur Hospital & Research Centre; Col Dr Kiran K.G – Prof & HOD, Department of Community Medicine, Dr Yogesh Bangera – Prof & HOD, Dept of OBG, Dr Noorulla – Senior Resident, Dept of Paediatrics & Dr Rohan Monis – Chief Administrative Officer, Kanachur Hospital & Research Centre were present on the dais. Dr Col Kiran, greeted the gathering and expressed about the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) and its importance in preventing diseases and reducing infant mortality.

Dr Rohan Monis, in his expressions thanked the ASHA workers for reaching out to the rural masses at the bottom of the pyramid and giving their best. He explained about the tertiary healthcare facility that hosted ASHA workers for the first time, about the specialties and facilities with capabilities and competencies from the medical fraternity.

Dr Yogesh Bangera, impressed on the fact that the first milk that’s secreted is called colostrum and is the best vaccine administered by the mother. Dr Uma Devi stressed that mothers milk is like a magic potion for the newborn’s and should be initiated soon after birth of the child. Abdul Rahiman in his chief address, insisted to the ASHA workers to reach out to the institution in times of need and take the best advantage of the facilities provided in the care of the poor patients.

Dr Uma Devi was felicitated for her exemplary community services by Abdul Rahiman on the occasion. Dr Gopi Prakash – Medical Officer of PHC Kotekar was also felicitated on the occasion.

Vote of thanks was rendered by Dr. (Brig) R. P. Singh, Assistant Professor – Community Medicine.

Dr Saba Mansoor, compered the event. Dr Satish More, Dr Shrivatsa, Dr Rajashekar and the rest of the team of Department of Community Medicine were an active part of this heart touching occasion.

Kanachur Hospital & Research Centre, Natekal, Mangalore is a 410 bed tertiary healthcare facility with all medical specialties hosting 7 modular operating rooms, 20 ICU beds with dedicated 5 NICU beds and 24 hours facilities into Emergency, Ambulance, Pharmacy, Central Laboratory & Labour Theatre.
