India has witnessed a second wave of Coronavirus and the possible arrival of the third wave are equally worrying. Apart from taking a vaccine, we must focus on self-care practices to safeguard ourselves during a possible third wave.

The report published in BBC on 22 June 2020 clearly mentions that the study, based on Covid – 19 deaths in India until May 20, shows early estimates of 3.3% of women contracting the infection in India were dying compared to 2.9% of all men. (India had a caseload of more than 110000 with 3433 deaths and a fatality rate of 3.1% when the study was conducted.) In the 40 – 49 age group, 3.2% of the infected women have died, compared to 2.1% of men. Only females have died in the 5 – 19 age group.

Thus, the mortality rate of women infected with Coronavirus is higher than men in India. So, it is high time to prioritise health with self-care practices.

Including healthy fats, protein, and good carbohydrates in the diet definitely contributes to building immunity. Nutraceuticals including zinc, selenium, vitamin C and vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, curcumin, and glutathione, have the potential to amplify the body’s natural defense system against any virus. Reducing intake of salt and sugar, fried and processed food to maintain normal blood sugar and blood pressure is also essential.

Many studies have clearly stated that people with obesity, diabetes have a higher risk of being affected by Covid – 19. Working from home, lockdown restrictions have restricted physical activities. But, staying active improves health. So one is advised to perform exercises, yoga practices, dance or any physical activities which not only will keep a person active but simultaneously helps in de-stressing.

There is a widespread myth supporting the consumption of alcohol to prevent Covid infections. Though alcoholic content in sanitiser is proven to be effective to kill the virus, the fact is that consumption of alcohol would not help to avoid the Covid infection in any manner. A healthy liver would be able to fight infections and remove toxins, but chronic alcoholics have a weaker liver and their immune system may be weaker compared to those who do not consume alcohol. Toxins in cigarette smoke are harmful since they produce high levels of oxidative stress in the lungs. So, one is advised to avoid alcohol and cigarette amid pandemic.

Dear woman, following the self-care practices with Covid appropriate behavior such as wearing masks, and avoiding public places unnecessarily will help boost the immune system as well as act as a shield from the possible third wave of Coronavirus.
