In a strong political response, Karnataka’s ruling Congress party will organize a massive public rally at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on April 17. This move is aimed at countering the BJP’s Janakrosh Yatre, said Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress chief DK Shivakumar while addressing the media.
The event will see participation from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, AICC General Secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala, and other senior party leaders. Shivakumar also announced that similar rallies would be conducted at district and taluk headquarters across the state in the following days.
Taking a swipe at the BJP, Shivakumar said the Janakrosh rally should actually be against the Union Government, pointing to the recent increase in fuel excise duties and the LPG price hike. “On the day BJP launched their yatra, the Centre hiked petrol and diesel duties by ₹2 and LPG by ₹50,” he noted.
He defended the Congress-led state government’s decisions, including minor hikes in milk and water prices, attributing them to inflation triggered by the Centre’s policies. “We were compelled to revise prices due to rising input costs driven by the Centre,” he said, highlighting that the government is still prioritizing the poor.
Shivakumar also criticized the Centre for not reducing domestic fuel prices despite a 4.23% drop in global crude oil rates. He accused the Centre of levying excessive taxes and profiting heavily from fuel sales.
