Couple Under Investigation for Home Birth Following WhatsApp Group Advice
A shocking incident in Chennai has led to an investigation after a couple chose to give home birth without professional medical assistance, instead relying on guidance from a WhatsApp group. The couple, Manoharan, a 36-year-old earthmover, and his 32-year-old wife Sukanya, live in Nandambakkam near Kundrathur. Sukanya’s third pregnancy led them to decide on a home birth, following advice from a WhatsApp group titled “Home Birth Experiences,” which boasts over 1,000 members sharing tips on natural childbirth.
The couple, opting not to consult medical professionals throughout the pregnancy, decided to handle the birth themselves when Sukanya went into labor on November 17. Manoharan took charge of the delivery process, relying entirely on instructions from the online group, which includes videos and unverified tips.
After the baby was born, the couple shared photos on social media, triggering concern among health authorities. A Public Health Officer filed a police complaint, citing the couple’s decision to forgo medical supervision as putting both the mother and child at severe risk. Experts warn that childbirth without trained medical professionals increases the chances of complications such as infections, birth injuries, or even fatalities.
Authorities are now ensuring proper care for the mother and child while considering legal actions to prevent similar incidents. Health officials also plan to launch awareness campaigns, urging the public to avoid relying on unverified medical advice from online groups.
