Court gives death sentence to those involved in Raichur honor killings

In a powerful verdict, a Raichur court has sentenced three individuals to death and awarded life imprisonment to nine others for the gruesome murder of five members of a family—an act rooted in rage over an inter-family marriage.

The incident occurred on July 11, 2020, in Sindhanur town. The victims were from the family of Mounesh, whose parents and siblings were brutally killed at their residence following a violent confrontation. The attackers were relatives of Manjula, Mounesh’s wife, who had opposed their union.

Despite both belonging to the Kuruba community, the couple faced hostility. After the two visited Manjula’s parental home six months post-wedding, threats followed. Mounesh had reported this to the police, which further angered Manjula’s family.

On the day of the crime, the accused stormed into Mounesh’s home while he and Manjula were away at the Sindhanur police station, sparing their lives but slaughtering his family members.

Raichur SP Putta Madaiah confirmed that the court imposed the death penalty on Sanna Fakirappa, Ambanna, and Somashekar, along with a fine of ₹47,000. Manjula’s parents and close relatives were among the nine sentenced to life imprisonment.

Since the killings, Mounesh and Manjula have been living under police protection in Sindhanur, still coping with the trauma of losing their family in a crime driven by hatred and vengeance.
