A student from Rajiv College of Ayurveda in Hassan, Karnataka, is facing legal action after a video of him celebrating Diwali with a makeshift petrol bomb went viral. The incident involved Kiran H, an intern pursuing a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, who reportedly siphoned petrol from his motorcycle and filled a plastic bag with a cracker bomb. He then ignited the device on the road near the college, causing a loud explosion while his friends filmed the act.
The video, which started circulating a week after Diwali, quickly attracted public attention due to its reckless nature, raising concerns about public safety. In response, Hassan’s Superintendent of Police (SP) confirmed that a case had been filed against Kiran and two other final-year students involved in the incident, citing public nuisance and endangerment.
The incident occurred near the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) terminal, which is within a restricted government zone, extending two kilometers around the HPCL unit. This makes the act even more dangerous, given the proximity to a major fuel loading and unloading facility.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to determine whether any safety or legal regulations were violated, based on the video evidence. The students’ careless celebration of Diwali has sparked outrage in the community, highlighting the importance of maintaining public safety during festive celebrations.
