The investigation into the tragic murder-suicide at Pakshikere has escalated, with police seizing mobile phones belonging to Karthik Bhat and his wife Priyanka, alongside two knives found within the couple’s two-bedroom residence.
On Monday, law enforcement detained Karthik’s mother, Shyamala, and elder sister, Kanmani, following a complaint from Savithri, Priyanka’s mother from Purale village, Shivamogga. Allegedly, the two women had pressured Karthik to vacate the apartment, which is registered under Kanmani’s husband’s name, for two years.
Shyamala and Kanmani were presented in Moodbidri court, where the judge ordered their judicial custody. However, both women experienced dizziness and discomfort en route to the prison, leading to their admission to a private hospital in Moodbidri.
During Monday’s apartment search, investigators collected several items for analysis. Karthik’s family was also asked to vacate the premises temporarily to allow for a comprehensive examination.
Adding to the unsettling findings, a family photo of Karthik, Priyanka, and their son Hriday was found defaced with black ink, suggesting profound resentment within the family. It’s unclear who vandalized the image.
The FIR highlights Karthik’s enduring harassment from his mother, who reportedly ignored her grandson. His diary details monthly loan payments made toward the apartment, despite his mother’s hurtful taunts that he had no claim over the property.
CCTV footage shows Karthik walking with a cloth-wrapped hand near the railway after parking his scooter by Kallapu temple, likely injured after attacking his family with a glass object.
