Crisis Ready: Dharwad Gears Up for Monsoon Mayhem
Amid continuous downpours in Dharwad—especially across Tupparihalla and Bennihalla watersheds—the district and taluk administrations have activated emergency helplines for immediate public assistance. Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu, heading the District Disaster Management Authority, announced that control rooms are now functional at the DC office, tahsildar offices, and the city municipal corporation to address crises triggered by the ongoing heavy rainfall.
According to the State Meteorological Department, intense rain is expected to persist, potentially flooding low-lying zones near the streams. In response, round-the-clock helpline centres have been launched, manned by shift-based teams. Once a call is received, on-duty personnel will alert the relevant departments and initiate prompt action. All reports will be documented and escalated to senior authorities for oversight.
Helpline Numbers:
- Rural Areas: 0836-2445508 / Toll-Free: 1077
- Urban Residents: 0836-2213888 / 2213889 / 2213869
The district has launched awareness initiatives, directing panchayat officers and secretaries to caution residents near water bodies and drainage lines. Officials have flagged 56 villages in flood-prone zones—including Gobbaragumpi, Hebbal, and Shirakol—as high-risk. Special nodal officers are appointed at the taluk level for each gram panchayat. In several villages, awareness is being raised through drumbeats, and emergency youth teams are ready to respond.
Boats, trained swimmers, and medical supplies are prepped in Navalgund. Fodder depots have been established for livestock, and even snake handlers are on standby for reptile emergencies.
