Dalit Leaders Raise Concerns Over Illegal Foreign Residents in Mangaluru
Mangaluru: In the wake of recent arrests of Bangladesh nationals in Udupi, Dalit leaders are sounding the alarm over the potential presence of a significant number of illegal foreign residents in Mangaluru. During a grievance meeting at the city police commissioner’s office on Sunday, leaders urged a thorough investigation by the police department into these suspicions. The meeting, chaired by DCPs Sidharth Goyal and BP Dinesh Kumar, featured Dalit leader Sadashiv Urvastore, who highlighted the influx of thousands of migrant workers from states like Bihar and Assam to Mangaluru and neighboring areas.
Urvastore expressed concerns that some of these workers might actually originate from Bangladesh or other bordering countries, particularly around West Bengal. He alleged that agents are arranging fake Aadhaar cards and temporary accommodations for these individuals, warning that any incidents involving these groups could tarnish the city’s reputation. He called for police checks in areas housing these laborers.
DCP Sidharth Goyal responded, stating that regular inspections are conducted on various groups, including balloon vendors and factory workers, with fingerprint scans incorporated in the verification process. He emphasized the importance of citizens ensuring police verification before renting out properties.
Additionally, Premnath Ballalbagh raised concerns about the need for more ICU beds at Wenlock District Hospital to better serve emergency cases, particularly from economically disadvantaged communities. He noted that patients from nearby districts frequently seek emergency treatment, and the limited ICU space often forces critically ill patients into general wards, leading to potential delays in care.
DCP Goyal assured that a formal request would be sent to the relevant departments regarding the ICU bed issue.
Leaders also expressed frustrations regarding the accessibility of Dr. BR Ambedkar Bhavan in Urvastore, which is intended for Dalit community events but has reportedly become less available. Girish Kumar questioned the effectiveness of such facilities if even government-reserved bookings are being denied.
In a separate issue, an unknown individual has been stealing items, including women’s undergarments, from the Dalit colony in Kudkori Hills near Kankanady. The suspect, believed to be armed, has evaded capture despite local youths being vigilant. Anil Kankanady urged police to take immediate action to apprehend the suspect.
The police department has also reached out to the Regional Passport Seva Kendra concerning an incident where clearance was mistakenly granted to an applicant with a criminal record. DCP Goyal explained that this oversight occurred due to the applicant’s criminal history not being updated during verification. Upon discovery, the police promptly informed the Passport Seva Kendra with the correct records.
