DC Orders Timely Payment to Farmers as Sugar Season Nears in Mandya
Deputy Commissioner Kumara on Monday directed sugar factories to ensure payment to sugarcane farmers within 15 days of supply. At a meeting with factory officials at the DC’s office, he noted several complaints about delayed payments last year and stressed that such delays must not be repeated.
He emphasized the importance of timely payments to prevent farmer grievances. Currently, five sugar mills in the district have completed their preparations for the upcoming crushing season. All mills are expected to commence operations in line with the schedule issued by the Sugar Commissioner. Factories must secure valid renewal certificates before beginning operations.
DC Kumara also warned that factories should crush only the sugarcane allocated within their designated zones. He insisted on strict adherence to jurisdictional boundaries and urged factories to swiftly resolve any internal operational issues.
An estimated 15,000 laborers from other districts and states are expected to arrive for cane harvesting. The DC directed factories to ensure proper facilities — including drinking water and sanitation — for these seasonal workers. In light of monsoon-related health concerns, he called for raising awareness among workers about infectious diseases. He also instructed that laborers’ wages be paid promptly and in accordance with agreed terms.
CD Gangadhar, President of the MySugar Sugar Factory, added that data from all regional sugar factories will be submitted to the government, requesting permission to initiate crushing operations by the end of June.
