Deadly plane crash in Sao Paulo kills influencer and pilot
A tragic plane crash occurred on Friday morning in Sao Paulo, Brazil, claiming the lives of 44-year-old pilot Gustavo Carneiro Medeiros and 49-year-old Marcio Louzada Carpena, a Brazilian lawyer, law professor, and social media influencer. The small aircraft, headed to Porto Alegre, crashed on a busy avenue in the Barra Funda neighborhood, near downtown Sao Paulo.
The crash resulted in the plane colliding with a public bus, injuring one woman, and striking a motorcyclist, both of whom are receiving medical treatment. Four others with minor injuries were also hospitalized. Local authorities, including Governor Tarcisio de Freitas, confirmed the identities of the victims.
CCTV footage showed the plane hitting the avenue near a busy intersection, causing the fuselage and nearby bus to catch fire. Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene to extinguish the flames. The crash occurred close to a major transportation hub, adding to the risk for commuters in the area.
The Brazilian Air Force has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash. The plane had taken off from a private airport just minutes before the incident, which took place less than 5 kilometers from the airport.
Carpena, with 50,000 social media followers, was known for sharing his motivational posts and glamorous lifestyle. He was a law professor at the Pontifical Catholic University in Porto Alegre. Pilot Medeiros had nearly 5,000 flight hours.
This crash is part of a concerning trend of deadly small aircraft accidents in Brazil, including a fatal crash last August that killed 72 people.
