Delay Looms Over Hosa Malangi Drinking Water Project in Chamarajanagar
The Hosa Malangi drinking water project, aimed at providing round-the-clock potable water to Chamarajanagar, faces potential delays as the urban development department has not yet approved its implementation. Initially proposed in 2020, the project seeks to draw water from the Cauvery River near Hosa Malangi village at an estimated cost of Rs 276 crore.
Currently, the Chamarajanagar city municipal council pumps nine lakh litres of water daily from the Cauvery River in T Narasipur town, Mysuru district, supplying 31 wards through pipelines. Despite efforts, frequent power cuts and outdated pumping equipment have reduced the quantity of water supplied. The city also relies on 284 borewells and 14 reverse osmosis plants to alleviate water scarcity, extending services to 12 surrounding villages.
The district administration’s proposal for the Hosa Malangi project remains pending with the urban development department, which cited ongoing works under the AMRUT scheme, including pipeline remodeling and modernization costing Rs 102 crore, as reasons for withholding approval. This setback has implications for resolving the city’s persistent water crisis.
Chamarajanagar MLA C Puttarangashetty advocated for the project, highlighting its potential to meet water demands until 2050 and alleviate shortages across the region. However, without departmental approval, the project’s realization faces uncertainty.
Chamarajanagar CMC commissioner PV Ramdas emphasized that ongoing AMRUT scheme initiatives have influenced the department’s decision to delay the Hosa Malangi project.
