Dharwad Schools Struggle to Implement Egg Nutrition Initiative Due to Lack of Resources
Schools in Dharwad district are facing significant challenges in distributing eggs to children under a nutrition initiative supported by the state government and the Azim Premji Foundation. Unlike other districts where schools prepare meals on-site, Dharwad schools lack essential resources like cooking gas to boil the eggs, creating hardships for headmasters and management committees.
The Zilla Panchayat raised the issue with the state government, but no solution has been found. Ashok Mishrikoti, president of the school monitoring and development committee at Government HPS, Kalaghatagi, highlighted that while the Azim Premji Foundation funds egg supplies for four days a week, schools are struggling due to rising egg prices and insufficient funds allocated for their preparation.
School authorities have called on the government to either provide cooking materials or partner with NGOs to supply boiled eggs. Despite the challenges, 1.87 lakh students from 1,069 schools in Dharwad receive midday meals, but the egg distribution remains difficult due to cost and logistical issues. Education officials are awaiting further guidance from the state government.
