Actor Ajay Devgn has shared his thoughts on the evolving nature of love and commitment, days after his wife Kajol stirred a public debate by suggesting that marriages should come with an expiry date and renewal option. While Kajol’s comment made headlines for its unconventional take on marriage, Ajay reflected on how the essence of love itself has changed over the generations.

Kajol’s bold take on marriage

The conversation began when Kajol appeared on Twinkle Khanna’s show “Two Much”, featuring Twinkle, Vicky Kaushal, and Kriti Sanon. During the popular “This or That” segment, Twinkle posed the question: “Should marriage have an expiry date and a renewal option?”

Without hesitation, Kajol stepped into the green zone, signifying agreement, while the others disagreed. She explained,

“I definitely think so. What guarantees that you’ll marry the right person at the right time? A renewal option would make sense, and if there’s an expiry date, no one has to suffer for too long.”

Her response sparked widespread reactions online, with some praising her honesty while others criticised the idea as too cynical or modern.

Ajay Devgn on how love has changed

In a separate interview with BookMyShow’s YouTube channel, where Ajay appeared alongside R. Madhavan to promote De De Pyaar De 2, the actor was asked about modern relationships and the shifting perception of love.

Ajay observed that love today feels more casual and superficial than it did in earlier times. He said,

“From what I see, it has become more casual than it was. The word ‘love’ has been used so much unnecessarily that it has lost its meaning. In our generation, saying ‘I love you’ was a big deal. Now people don’t understand the depth of that word — it’s overused.”

Madhavan agreed, reminiscing that people once treated the word love with more seriousness and intention. “Even when we had to sign a card with ‘love,’ we took it seriously,” he said. Ajay added humorously that in today’s world, “every message has a heart emoji or ends with ‘love.’”

A strong bond despite changing times

Despite their differing views on modern relationships, Kajol and Ajay Devgn continue to be one of Bollywood’s most admired and enduring couples. Their love story began on the sets of the 1995 film Hulchul, where friendship gradually blossomed into romance.

After four years of dating, the two tied the knot on 24 February 1999 in a low-key private ceremony away from the media spotlight. The couple has starred together in several films over the years, including Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha, Raju Chacha, and Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior.

They share two children — daughter Nysa and son Yug — and have often spoken about the importance of mutual respect and independence in their marriage.

Kajol, known for her candid and unfiltered personality, has frequently spoken about how she and Ajay have maintained their bond by giving each other space and trust. Ajay, on the other hand, has often described their relationship as “imperfect but real,” grounded in understanding rather than appearances.

Fans react to the couple’s remarks

Following the couple’s recent comments, social media has been abuzz with discussions about the relevance of Kajol’s “expiry date” idea and Ajay’s take on emotional depth in love. While some fans have applauded the stars for bringing honest conversations about marriage into the spotlight, others have taken a more traditional stance, arguing that relationships should be based on permanence rather than convenience.

Still, the duo’s contrasting perspectives have only reinforced what fans admire about them — their ability to speak openly and differently yet remain strong together.
