Los Angeles: Bradley Cooper’s upcoming film ‘Maestro’ is attracting significant attention, particularly due to the controversy surrounding the use of a prosthetic nose on the actor’s face, which has sparked criticism and discussions around a ‘Jewface’ controversy.

The term ‘Jewface’ refers to negative portrayals of Jewish people that rely on stereotypes. In a teaser providing a glimpse into Leonard Bernstein’s love story with Felicia Montealegre, Cooper is seen wearing a noticeable prosthetic nose to portray the conductor.

This has ignited a debate about the film potentially perpetuating Jewish stereotypes through exaggerated facial features and casting a non-Jewish actor in a Jewish role. The prosthetic nose, in particular, has been deemed unnecessary.

Bradley Cooper, recognized for roles in films like ‘The Hangover’ series, ‘A Star is Born,’ and voicing Rocket Raccoon in the MCU films, portrays the legendary musical conductor alongside Carey Mulligan, who plays his wife Felicia Montealegre. The movie explores their relationship.

On social media, users have expressed their opinions about the prosthetic’s size, comparing it to actual images of Bernstein to highlight the disparity. Many have criticized the decision, noting that Cooper’s portrayal is not an accurate reflection of Bernstein’s appearance.

One individual commented, “It appears needless to have taken that route when the resemblance was already close.” Another said, “The real Leonard Bernstein didn’t have the exaggerated nose that Bradley Cooper is wearing in ‘Maestro’.”

A perplexed user questioned, “Is it considered acceptable for Bradley Cooper to wear an overly large prosthetic nose to depict a Jewish man in ‘Maestro’?”

Critics have also pointed out that Cooper’s natural nose is larger than Bernstein’s.

Directed by Bradley Cooper, ‘Maestro’ is a forthcoming biopic centered around the life of composer Leonard Bernstein, encompassing his professional achievements, personal life, marriage, and sexuality. The film is scheduled for release on September 2, 2023.
