Dhoom 4 on the Horizon: Aditya Chopra Reinvents the Franchise
Nearly eleven years after the release of Dhoom 3 in 2013, Aditya Chopra is set to bring the high-octane action franchise back to the big screen with Dhoom 4. With a commitment to reinventing the series while preserving its core theme of the classic cat-and-mouse game between thieves and police, Chopra is reportedly working closely with Vijay Krishna Acharya, who directed the last installment.
Since its inception with Dhoom in 2004, the franchise has continuously raised the stakes, incorporating high-tech elements and increasingly elaborate heists. Dhoom 2 followed suit in 2006, and Dhoom 3 elevated the narrative with spectacular visuals and action sequences. Now, Chopra aims to keep the series relevant for contemporary audiences while introducing fresh ideas and dynamics.
In a surprising twist, reports suggest that the franchise may steer away from established superstars like Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan for the antagonist role. Instead, Aditya Chopra is eyeing younger talent, specifically Ranbir Kapoor, to portray the new-age conman in Dhoom 4. The actor has reportedly expressed interest in the project and is even willing to undergo a transformation by going grey for this role. This casting decision signals a fresh direction for the franchise, aimed at appealing to a new generation of viewers.
With Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra not returning as the police duo, the film will feature established actors from the younger generation in the cop roles, indicating a significant shift in the franchise’s ensemble.
The director for Dhoom 4 is expected to be finalised by mid-2025, with filming set to commence in early 2026. By that time, Ranbir Kapoor will have completed his commitments to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War and Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayan. Interestingly, Dhoom 4 will mark Kapoor’s 25th full-fledged feature film, making this project a significant milestone in his career.
In a separate but equally intriguing story, Guneet Monga Kapoor, a prominent figure in Indian cinema, recently shared her unique journey as a producer on the podcast The Bombay Film Story. Unlike many in the industry who aspire to act or direct, Monga has always been driven by her passion for producing films.
Beginning her career as an intern in 2004 under Anureeta Saigal, she worked on various foreign productions shot in India. Her big break came when she secured a role with the producers of The Lord of the Rings, which involved scouting locations across India. “I was their retainer for a year; I had to shoot locations pan India and send them the pictures,” Monga recalls.
Her pivotal moment came while working as a production coordinator on Vic Sarin’s Murder Unveiled in 2005. Sarin recognised her potential and mentored her, teaching her the intricacies of film production. “He saw potential in me. Vic was the first one to teach me how to break down call sheets. He made me head of production,” she shared, highlighting the importance of mentorship in her career.
As Dhoom 4 gears up to redefine the franchise, with fresh talent and innovative storytelling, audiences can anticipate a thrilling ride filled with suspense and action. Meanwhile, Guneet Monga Kapoor’s story serves as an inspiring reminder of the diverse paths to success in the film industry. Both narratives illustrate the evolving landscape of Indian cinema, characterized by new talent and ambitious projects.
