From Bengaluru to the US’ ‘Mecca’ of film making- Los Angeles, Argya Sadan’s life is every script writer’s dream.

Originally an architect, Argya was raised in Singapore and later graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture degree in Bengaluru. As an Indian raised in Singapore, the drastically contrasted cultural and social entities of the two countries moulded her as a person and drove her to pursue opportunities in different places. Argya worked at a sustainable eco-design firm in Cape Town, South Africa, to create quality housing at minimal costs to the benefit of local economies.

She soon transitioned from being an architect to being a production and set designer and has adapted extremely well to the change.

Her fascination with the varied stories and personalities portrayed by people and a deeply driven wanderlust allowed her to experience ancient as well as modern human traditions, values and architectural structures. Her passion for articulating stories these through film and design, saw her placed among the 10 students accepted into the top film school in the world- American Film Conservatory, where she was part of the prestigious Production Design programme in 2015. The school’s exalted alumni include the A-listers of Hollywood such as David Lynch, Darren Aronofsky, Terrence Malick, Sharon Seymour, Wally Pfister and Matthew Libatique.

Another feather was added to Argya’s hat when the Art Directors Guild identified her as one of 13 exceptionally talented young designers for its 2017 Production Apprentice Initiative. Her thesis film ‘Little Darling’ was also nominated for ‘Best Production Design’ at the 2018 Utah Film Festival and Awards and received the Gold for Production Design at the 2018 International Independent Film Awards.

Now, based out of Los Angeles, Argya works as a Production and Set Designer donning several roles in the Art Department for a wide variety of films and TV shows. She is currently working on the hit TV show ‘9-1-1’, Fox’s highest rated new series.

“Working in the US is very challenging as the industry boasts of the best. LA, the ‘Mecca’ of US film-making, is now producing mini series for different viewer profiles,” she says.

She also explained that her fascination with varied stories and people’s personalities inspire her. “This awareness allows me to adapt to new scripts and stories. The people with whom I work value my insight and approach to design. My experience of having lived in different countries has also helped me tremendously.”

Among her other works are ‘Hustle’ and the production design work for Daphne Willi’s new music video featuring Grammy-nominated artist Grizzle.

Rubbing shoulders with the who’s who of the industry is what Argya likes best, even if it is by design.
