New Delhi: Actor Gulshan Devaiah, who recently received praise for his performance as Prince Kulashekara in Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1, has shared a refreshingly candid take on the increasing belief that social media popularity influences casting decisions in the film industry. At a time when follower counts are often viewed as indicators of star value, the actor has made it clear that he is unfazed by the trend.

“Follower counts don’t matter to me,” says Gulshan

Speaking to IANS, Gulshan Devaiah dismissed the idea that online numbers hold real significance in determining an actor’s worth or future opportunities. “I don’t give a sh*t. It’s a trend. Is it valid? Does it have any real merit? I don’t know,” he said, emphasising that he does not view these metrics as important or decisive.

He added that while some casting decisions may be influenced by online popularity, it is not something that concerns him personally. “Everyone should find their own way,” he remarked, maintaining a neutral stance towards those who rely on social media traction.

Talent over trends

Using himself as an example, Gulshan pointed out that his relatively modest online presence has never stopped him from securing work. “Now open my social media and see how many followers I have. I don’t even have 300K. Yet, I am getting work,” he noted.

His filmography—which includes Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota, Ghost Stories, Badhaai Do, and Ulajh—reflects his versatility and success across both mainstream and independent cinema. For him, this is proof that talent can thrive without pandering to online image-building.

Authenticity is his priority

When asked whether he feels compelled to participate in social media trends or create content to boost engagement, Gulshan offered a firm no. He said he refuses to compromise his authenticity for the sake of algorithms and follower growth.

“If I suddenly start changing for social media and become someone else, then I won’t be myself. My authentic self — that’s what matters to me!” he said.

Maintaining his individuality has been a cornerstone of his artistic identity, and Gulshan remains committed to that path despite the shifting expectations within the industry.

A grounded voice in a changing industry

As conversations continue about the role of social media in modern celebrity culture, Gulshan Devaiah stands out for his straightforward and thoughtful perspective. His stance not only reflects his confidence as a performer but also offers reassurance to emerging actors who may feel pressured to prioritise digital presence over craft.

With his latest work garnering attention and more roles coming his way, Gulshan continues to prove that commitment to authenticity—and consistently strong performances—will always find recognition.
