Mumbai: Actor Shahid Kapoor has clarified long-standing assumptions about his entry into Bollywood, firmly stating that he did not receive any industry support from his father, veteran actor Pankaj Kapur. Speaking on the Punjab First Voice podcast, Shahid said his parents’ separation when he was three meant he grew up away from his father’s shadow and built his career independently.

Shahid Kapoor clears misconceptions about his Bollywood debut

Shahid, who has now completed over 20 years in the film industry, addressed the widespread belief that his family name helped him get opportunities. The Jab We Met actor stated that he rarely met his father during childhood and was raised solely by his mother, actor-dancer Neelima Azeem.

“People think I am an actor because I am Pankaj Kapur’s son, but my parents separated when I was just three,” Shahid said. “I didn’t spend much time with my father, so nobody even knew I was his son, nor did I ever use his name. I lived with my mother. Things just fell into place for me. I never asked my father for help, and he never made calls to get me work.”

Shahid further explained that misconceptions stem from the assumption that having an actor-parent automatically provides industry access. He emphasised that his journey involved auditions, training, and gradual recognition, not inherited opportunities.

Talking about his parents’ separation

Reflecting briefly on Pankaj Kapur and Neelima Azeem’s separation in 1984, Shahid shared that although he was very young, the emotional impact remained.

“I was too young when my parents divorced, but you do feel the void. I think many people can relate,” he said.

Neelima Azeem raised Shahid as a single parent and later welcomed her second son, Ishaan Khatter, with actor Rajesh Khattar. Shahid has often spoken about the close bond he shares with Ishaan.

Balancing family and work

The actor also opened up about parenthood and maintaining boundaries between work and personal life. Shahid, who is married to Mira Rajput, said he tries to ensure his professional commitments do not spill over into his home.

He shared, “Once I am back home, I like to take on the role of a father, husband, and son. I try not to bring work home.”

Shahid and Mira have two children—a daughter and a son—who, he said, have brought grounding and joy to his life.

Shahid Kapoor’s recent and upcoming projects

On the work front, Shahid was last seen in Deva, which released on 31 January. Directed by Rosshan Andrrews, the action-drama saw him play a police officer opposite Pooja Hegde.

The actor is set to reunite with filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj for their fourth collaboration after Kaminey (2009), Haider (2014), and Rangoon (2017). The untitled project features Triptii Dimri, Nana Patekar, Randeep Hooda, and a special appearance by Vikrant Massey.

Shahid is currently filming Cocktail 2, co-starring Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna. The project is expected to be a fresh, contemporary take on urban relationships, with Shahid reportedly playing a role unlike anything he has done before.

Conclusion

Shahid Kapoor’s remarks put to rest frequent assumptions about his Bollywood beginnings, underscoring that he carved his path without relying on his father’s fame or connections. With a strong line-up of films ahead, Shahid continues to reinforce his position as one of the most versatile and self-made actors in contemporary Hindi cinema.
