The 29th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) concluded in Thiruvananthapuram with Brazilian film Malu earning the prestigious Suvarna Chakoram (Golden Crow Pheasant) and a cash prize of ₹20 lakh. Directed by Pedro Freire, the film portrays a volatile, unemployed actress grappling with a strained relationship with her daughter while living with her conservative mother.
Malayalam film Feminichy Fathima (Feminist Fathima), directed by debutant Fasil Muhammed, captured audience hearts and won the Audience Poll Award. Set in Ponnani, Malappuram, the film explores a housewife’s struggle against her orthodox husband, resonating deeply with viewers during the week-long festival.
The Rajata Chakoram (Silver Crow Pheasant) for Best Director went to Iranian filmmaker Farshad Hashemi for Me, Mariam, the Children, and 26 Others. Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cocina were honored as Best Debut Directors for their Spanish film The Hyperboreans.
This year’s festival spotlighted women filmmakers, with 52 out of 177 films helmed by female directors. Bollywood veteran Shabana Azmi received a special honor at the opening ceremony, while Cannes Grand Prix winner Payal Kapadia was awarded the Spirit of Cinema at the valedictory event.
IFFK 2024 proved a celebration of diverse storytelling and a platform for women-centric narratives.
