Mangaluru: The Department of ENT, A J Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre, Mangaluru, held a CME programme on Tracheostomy on Thursday, November 21. The CME programme was held at Auditorium II at AJIMS & RC.
HOD, Department of ENT, AJIMS & RC and organising chairman Dr Devan P P, Dean, AJIMS & RC Dr Ashok Hegde, Prof, Department of ENT, KSHEMA Dr Vadish Bhat, observer for the day Dr Kailesh Poojary, Prof. Department of ENT and organising secretary Dr Mahesh, Consultant ENT Surgeon Dr Gautham Kulamarva, Associate Dean Dr Francis Monteiro, and Prof. and HOD, Department of Anaesthesiology, KSHEMA Dr Sripad were the chief guests on the occasion.
The programme was inaugurated at around 10.45 AM when the dignitaries lit the traditional lamp.
Welcoming the dignitaries and the gathering, Dr. Devan said, “What is absolutely certain is death. What is absolutely a prerequisite- breath. When death is at the door and we are able to save a life; that is when we feel that it is a privilege to be a doctor.”
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Ashok said, “The medical field is ever-changing and evolving. We need to stay updated with the changes and developments. Programmes like this CME are required for us to keep our knowledge in the medical field updated.” He lauded the Department for inviting guest speakers from other departments like physiotherapy, speech and hearing, and nursing. “It is not only the surgery but the care given to the patient afterwards that makes this procedure a success,” he said. He then called upon the PG students of the ENT department to make good use of the CME and learn as much as they can from the various sessions scheduled for the day.
Dr Kailesh, in his address to the gathering, said, “Tracheostomy is a multi-disciplinary approach. It is not only the surgeon who does the work, but the follow-up is done by other departments also. You have an integrated team of nursing, physiotherapy, speech and swallowing therapist. Errors and risks are reduced when you have multi-disciplinary teams and this is what this CME signifies. There are different faculty members here from different departments who will emphasise on the different roles of individuals in that team.”
The inauguration was brought to a close with a tea break before the other sessions of the day could begin.
Earlier, Dr Vadish gave a talk on ‘Tracheostomy – Approaches and Technique’.
During the rest of the day, various speakers will be holding sessions for the attendees. The CME programme is scheduled to end at 3.30 PM.
First year PG ENT student Aisha Nehla compered the programme.
