DSU’s Talent Search to begin from December 12

Bengaluru: Dayananda Sagar University (DSU), one of the prestigious campuses in the country, has chosen a unique path to transform India into a leader in innovation. After setting up the state of-the-art laboratories to foster innovation, DSU is now going a step ahead by identifying and rewarding the country’s talented youth through the DSU talent search 2017. Scheduled to be held from December 12-14 at their campus, the talent search 2017 promises to nurture talent in an individual/ group of students and empower them with new skills which can be applied in a real-world situation.

According to DSU – Pro Vice Chancellor: Prof R Janardhan the talent search provides a one-of-its-kind opportunity where students from class 9-12 from various schools across the country will get a chance to explore the best of facilities. Students will also get hands on training from experts. Interestingly, upon completion of the training, students can apply their newly acquired skills and expertise to develop a product or service which can be further developed into a prototype stage and proof of concept (POC) level. The varsity will also empower participating students to work on a design and demonstrate their skills through 3D models, videos, oral and poster presentations. Overall, the talent search promises to open horizons for the young minds by testing their talent through a number of contests; programming in C Language to elocution contests and quiz competitions in Science and Mathematics.

The biggest highlight of the talent search is the ideathon wherein students need to brainstorm for solutions. For example, a student will be given a mobile phone. It may not be any surprise as they would have already used gizmos. However, the students will be in for surprise when they get to know that the gizmo is a combination of rare earth and precious metals and contains 250 mg of silver, 24 mg of gold and 9 mg of palladium, while a laptop has up to 1,000 mg of silver, 220 mg of gold and 500 grams of copper. Now comes the real challenge as the students will have to come up with ideas as to how these precious metals can be extracted from the e-waste (when the mobile phones stop working and are to be discarded)? The talent search also tests students’ skills in a hackathon on topics like mobile app development, making one’s own battery and demonstration of spectroscopy technique among other options. DSU offers a number of exciting awards to teams/individual toppers. Total cash prizes to be offered are to the tune of Rs 3 lakh plus certificates.

DSU’s partner companies that have set up state of the art labs in its startup village would support further development of the initial Idea/Concept to reach advanced levels. The talent search will be preceded by a 2-day training program to empower students with new skills.

Who can participate?

Teams of 3-5 students may be sent from each school/college. A maximum of three batches of students under both the junior and senior categories can apply from each school.
