Natl Workshop on Design for Manufacturing MSMEs opens at NITK

Mangaluru: The two-day National Workshop on Design Components, organised by the Ministry of MSME in collaboration with the Centre for System Design and the MSME DFO Mangalore, began today at NITK. The workshop was inaugurated by the Director (in charge) of NITK, Prof. G C Mohan Kumar, Dean R and C Prof. S M Kulkarni, Coordinator CSD, NITK, Prof. K V Gangadharan, Sundar Shettigar, Assistant Director, Br. MSME DFO, Mangalore, and the workshop coordinators, Dr Pruthviraj and Dr Bijuna.

More than 500 people attended the workshop, including NITK students, entrepreneurs, aspiring entrepreneurs, and 30 MSMEs. Previously, the team organised several such awareness programmes on the Ministry of MSME’s design scheme at Virajpet, the NITK campus, and Udupi to raise awareness about MSME and to provide expert advice and cost-effective solutions to real-time design problems for new product development for its continuous improvement and value addition in existing/new products.

Sundar Shettighar, Assistant Director, DFO, Mangalore, addressed the participants and enlightened them about the different schemes offered by the Ministry of MSME. Yathiraj Kasal, GM and Head-Wipro 3D, led a session on 3D Printing and Driving Innovation. Coordinators – Implementing agency- NITK, Ministry of MSME, Prof. K V Gangadharan, Dr Bijuna presented a session on MSME Innovative Scheme of MSM Designing component. Nithin Vas, M/S Paperseed, highlighted his experience as a successful MSME design component implementer. Srinivas V, (NITK Alumnus) and Director of Lucid Engineering, gave a presentation on product design.

The main highlight of the workshop was the display of the unique MSME local traditional handmade products such as Mangalore toys, coconut shell artefacts, driftwood, Channapatna wooden toys and Lacquerware, pressed flowers and leaves art, handmade art and craft jewellery, many eco-friendly products, organic food and bath products, IoT training kits, and so on at the NITK Campus.
