Panambur and Thannirbavi beaches cleaned for World Environment Day

Mangaluru: India has been chosen as the global host for World Environment Day-2018. In this regard, the Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Govt. of India, has planned to undertake the cleaning of beaches and river stretches in the country under the tagline of “Beat Plastic Pollution.”

The College of Fisheries, Mangaluru in collaboration with the District Administration, Dakshina Kannada and Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management, initiated a week long beach cleaning programme that was launched on June 1 at Panambur beach.

Dr. S M Shivaprakash, Dean, College of Fisheries, inaugurated the event and addressed the volunteers and explained to them about the cleanness of beach and the negative impact of plastic on marine life.

Different line departments of Environment and Ecology, Department of Fisheries and students of the College of Fisheries, Sahayadri Engineering college, NGOs and the general public participated actively in the beach cleaning programme, during which a stretch of 3 km of the beach was cleaned. Nearly two truckloads of plastic garbage were picked up from the beach and was disposed off with the help of the City Corporation.

Dr. S R Someshakar, Professor and Dr. Lakshmipathi M T, Associate Professor, College of Fisheries, were the coordinators of the programme. Dr. Dinesh Kumar, Regional Director, Environment, Uttappa S, Ministry of Environment, Mahesh Kumar, Deputy Director Fisheries, Dr. Srinivas Rao K, Prinicipal of Sahayadri College of Engineering and Management, Shreelatha U A, Academic Administrative Officer, Yateesh Baikampady, Coordinator, Beach Management Committee, officials from various school and colleges, industrial staff, and others were present.

The cleaning programme continued on June 2 but, this time at Thannirbavi beach. Different line departments of Environment and Ecology, Department of Fisheries and students of College of Fisheries, Sahayadri Engineering college, Aided Vidhya Dayeeni High School, Surathkal, Koloor High School, Mangaluru and Bertrand Russell High School, Baikampady participated in the second day’s beach cleaning programme.
