Mangaluru: India marks January 26 as its Republic Day every year. In 2023, the country is celebrating its 74th Republic Day. While India gained independence from the British Raj in 1947, it wasn’t until the Indian Constitution came into effect on Jan 26, 1950, that it became a sovereign state, declaring it a republic. The 74th Republic Day of India was celebrated with gaiety and patriotic fervour online by Spearhead Academy, a centre for Media Studies, a unit of Village TV Trust ® Mangalore.

On the eve of its original day, the Academy had a meaningful celebration in the presence of over 40 people who had gathered on Zoom. Being a day when the constitution came into effect the Academy chose a fitting point for discussion, the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. The topic ‘We the People of India’ was well chosen by the resource person of the day. Dr Kumaraswamy Bejjihalli, Dean of Arts, Loyola Degree College, Bangalore was the Guest of the day and CA Valerian Dalmeida, Mentor and Advisor of Spearhead Academy, was honoured as the President of the programme.

The gathering commenced with an introduction and welcome by the host, Roshan Honest Raj. This was followed by the reading of the Preamble of the Indian Constitution in both Kannada and English. The event moved forward with an outstanding presidential note by CA Valerian Dalmeida. In his talk, Valerian said that Every Indian’s duty begins when the right to vote is exercised. The Indians are unfortunately made to understand that the soldier in the border is more important than the ordinary labourer. Soldiers dying at the border is considered a martyr but the farmer dying in misery is forgotten. Speaking on Justice, Liberty, Fraternity and Equality he said that Newskarnataka, Newskannada, Spearhead Media, Village TV and Spearhead Academy are continuously striving to do their best to the people and their well-being, of course, governed by the Constitution of India. The heartfelt comments of CA Valerian Dalmeida aroused feelings of love and brotherhood among all and ignited a spark to care for the neighbour.

Dr Kumaraswamy Bejjihalli, the resource person of the day In his talk, highlighted the importance of the Constitution and its unique features such as Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic and Republic enshrined in the preamble of the constitution. Keeping the topic of the day, ‘We the People of India’ he stressed the importance of coming together as one. The constitution itself calls in its very first words that we come together irrespective of caste, creed, religion, language, and sex. He also raised a lot of questions for the participants and the people of India at large to contemplate of the given situation of the day.

The talk was followed by a question and answer session, where the participants very actively asked questions and discussed with the resource person on various points of the discussion. Immediately after the vote of thanks, Ms Shwetha Wenona, Assistant Professor of Loyola Degree College, Bangalore, led the gathering to sing the National Anthem, a fitting end to the programme.
